Raila promises ‘mother-of-all’ demonstrations on October 26

The National Super Alliance will hold the ‘mother of all’ demonstrations on October 26, date set for repeat polls.

NASA boss Raila Odinga made this announcement on Wednesday at Kamukunji grounds where he addressed his supporters.

He said their resolve to have reforms at the electoral commission remains on course.

“(Wafula ) Chebukati’s statement today confirms that IEBC takes instructions from State house. Today we are changing our call from no reforms, no elections to October, no elections,” said Raila according to Daily Nation.

Chebukati during a press briefing said the commission can longer stomach threats by political parties involved in the elections.

Chebukati also said that with the current situation at the commission, it will be hard for him to promise free, fair and credible repeat polls.

This follows resignation of Dr Roselyn Akombe who has since fled to New York.

Dr Akombe indicted the commission stating it is in no position to conduct credible repeat polls because the commissioners have been siding with some political parties during the plenary.

Raila said with the current environment, an election cannot be held and it calls for dialogue.

He said Akombe’s resignation is a pointer to interference from State House.

However, President Uhuru Kenyatta has pronounced himself on the going forward with repeat polls as planned.

Speaking during a rally in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, Uhuru said government will deal accordingly with anyone who tries to disrupt the repeat polls.

“Whoever will try to stop the elections, by attacking IEBC officials, firm action will be taken against them. We cannot allow a few individuals to destroy our country,” charged the President.

He maintained that while Raila has a right to boycott the polls, Kenyans have an equal right to vote.

“We are telling Raila you have a right to boycott the election but Kenyans have a right to vote.”
