Opposition leader Raila Odinga has said he is ready to face treason charges.

Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai on Thursday said it is high treason for anyone to be sworn-in as President without being declared by the IEBC.

“The criminal law of the Republic of Kenya, in Article 40 of the penal code provides or stipulates that that sort of process, is high treason,” said Muigai.

But during a meeting with envoys at his Capitol Hill office on Friday, Raila said he will continue with his swearing-in as long President Uhuru Kenyatta will not reach out to him.

“Let them charge me for treason. I am ready,” he said as quoted by the Star.

He has failed to recognize Uhuru as the legitimate president of the country. He insists he is illegally in office making him an “illegitimate” leader.

It is not clear if the President has reached out to the opposition boss yet.

US Ambassador Robert Godec who led the diplomats together with UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey maintained Raila must drop his “inauguration” bid.

He said the best way to resolve the impasse between NASA and Jubilee was by holding immediate and sustained national dialogue.

“I stress the need to uphold the constitution. We urge the government, Opposition and all Kenyans to engage in open, transparent national conversation,” said Godec.
