Raila’s brother, Oburu Odinga to quit active politics

The Orange Democratic Movement Party (ODM) has received a blow after one of its top members announced he will quit active politics soon.

Brother to ODM Party leader Raila Odinga, Oburu Odinga on Monday told journalists in Shanzu, Mombasa County that he will retire from active politics soon.

However, he did not disclose exactly when he will quit. Oburu said that at the moment, he will not vie for any elective seat but will instead, channel his energy towards ensuring that his brother Raila Odinga wins the August 8 polls.

Oburu was at the center of controversy days ago following bungled ODM nominations in Bondo constituency where he (Oburu) was vying for MP.

He had been declared the winner after garnering 15,784 votes against his opponent who is the incumbent Gideon Ochanda’s 9,538.

But ODM’s National Elections Board Chaired by Judith Pareno nullified his win and handed it to Ochanda. Oburu later announced he will vie as an independent.

He also defended himself against claims that ODM nominated to the East African Legislative Assembly due to his brother’s influence.

While announcing his withdrawal for the EALA nomination, he stated that Raila had nothing to do with his nomination because he is qualified enough to hold the position without his brother’s “push”.

“The people who are commenting on my nomination for EALA are actually irrelevant because they are talking about a non-issue.  I am just as qualified as any other person but I cannot focus on EALA as well as the presidential campaigns. That is why I declined the nomination,” he said.
