Kenya’s telecommunication giants, Safaricom, Telkom and Airtel have been fined Sh311 million by the regulator, Communication Authority of Kenya for failing to meet service standards in the 2015/16 financial year.

CA standards require the telecommunication firms to meet the threshold set of 80 per cent in its performance.

For the three firms which have been operation for over four years, they have not met this minimum threshold.

CA in a statement on Friday noted that Safaricom scored 62.5 per cent, Airtel and Telkom scored 75 per cent each.

“The authority issued the licensees with warning notices for non-compliance and also fined them a sum equivalent to 0.15 per cent of their individual latest financial returns for the period prior to June 30 2017,” said CA assistant director Rachel Alwala according to the Star.

All the three firms failed in the compliance of call completion target.  Basically, this is the total number of calls that end successfully after being set up.

In relation to this, the firms have a target of 95 per cent where Airtel attained 93.3 per cent, Telkom 93.1 per cent and Safaricom 91.8 per cent.

The three telecommunication firms are yet to achieve rates of less than two per cent on dropped calls.

In compliance with others aspects, Telkom was the best performer with full compliance in Nairobi, Central, Nyanza and Western.

It was followed by Airtel which has fully complied in four regions-Nyanza, Western and Naiorbi while Safaricom came in third with full compliance in Coast and Nyanza.
