Police in Nairobi are pursuing a gang of eight people who stormed industrialist Manu Chandaria’s posh Muthaiga residence in the wee hours of Monday morning.

Yakub Rashid, the Nairobi Regional Police Commander confirmed the incident saying that the robbers made away with Ksh600,000 and expensive jewelry.

“Preliminary investigations have established that the businessman heard a loud bang at his main door and his efforts to call his gate’s security phone proved futile. Two armed thugs then gained entry into his house and robbed him [of] unknown amount of money and assorted jewelry at gunpoint,” a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) read.

A rifle stolen from an AP officer at the main gate of Dr Chandaria’s residence was used to fire several shots by the thugs who are reportedly said to have escaped to Karura Forest with gunshot wounds.

Following the incident, DCI arrested two private guards and a police constable who were manning the residence. DCI suspects that the robbery was an inside job.

The three arrested were Jared Omboga Makambe, the police constable was and Judah Wafula and Stephen Omwega.

“Officers responding to the scene conducted [a] thorough search leading to the recovery of the suspected stolen G3 rifle at a nearby bush,” DCI added in the statement.

In September, police mounted a thorough security operation in the posh residence.

At the entrance to the estate off Thika Super Highway, police mounted a roadblock where everyone who was entering the estate had to undergo mandatory security checks.

One was required to provide their ID number, name of employer, house number of purpose of visit. Muthaiga is heavily inhibited by foreign envoys.

This caused uproar among Muthaiga residents but police insisted that the security check would continue.
