Starting July, passenger trains in the new SGR will increase from two to six, in a move to address a rising demand of by Kenyans to travel to Coast from Nairobi and vice versa.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala said Kenya Railways will increase the frequency of passenger trains by bringing on board four more Madaraka Express trains to shuttle passengers between Nairobi and Mombasa.
In the new plan, three trains will shuttle commuters to Nairobi daily while three others ferry passengers to Mombasa daily.
The CS said since the launch of the SGR and Madraka Express passenger train early this month, it has increased the number of domestic tourists visit Coastal region.
He said that the increase of passenger trains will ensure that demand for travel by rail from Nairobi to Mombasa and vice versa has been met.
“It has come to our understanding that many travelers have been missing the opportunity to travel by rail. Some groups of tourists have been unable to travel to Mombasa due to limited seats,” said the CS at Kwale as reported by Business Daily.
The first train will be an inter-county train meaning it will make stopovers at some other train stations like in Voi, Mtito Andei and Athi River. It will leave Mombasa at 8 a.m.
The second train will be an express train that will leave the Coastal city at 9 a.m.
