Kenyans seeking to travel using the Madaraka Express can now book their tickets online, Kenya Railways Cooperation has announced.

KRC Managing Director Atanas Maina said with the online booking system, a passenger can buy upto five ticket and pay via M-Pesa.

The customer gets a confirmation message after the payment. The online booking portal has features that allow one to track the status of the ticket.

“Online booking platform is a positive move for passengers who have been calling upon the Corporation to diversify the booking options,” said Maina on Monday according to the Star.

This new development comes after the corporation moved booking dates from 14 days to 30 days.

The new online booking system is expected to address teething challenges reported in the past.

Previously, customers used the USSD payment mechanism. They dialed *639# to book, paid via M-pesa.

Others visited the nearest SGR station to purchase tickets over the counter.

Since the launch of the Madaraka Express in June, over half a million Kenyans have traveled using the train to and from Mombasa.
