A few days after Homeboyz Radio sacked veteran radio presenter Shaffie Weru, he has moved to court suing his former employer for “unfair and unlawful termination”.

Shaffie through MMA Advocates has sued Radio Africa which manages Homeboyz Radio citing that he was shocked to learn of his dismissal after working for the company for 18 years.

The presenter was fired alongside his co-host Neville and DJ Joe Mfalme over their utterances on sexual violence against women during their breakfast show Lit Off.

Initially, Homeboyz suspended Shaffie who was the station’s Programmes Controller for two weeks following the incident which he apologized for citing that he did not in any way advocate for violence against women.

However, a twist came after the East African Breweries Limited (EABL) paused advertising with Radio Africa until the issues was sorted out.

In its demands, EABL called for conclusive investigations into the matter and retraining on ethical reporting for the radio hosts.

What followed was the termination of contracts for Shaffie and two others.

He is now suing his employer for Ksh21,157,500 in damages calculated on his annual salary of Ksh682,500 and gratuity for years served.

His lawyers say that their client learnt of his dismissal via social media.

“Indeed and shockingly so, the aforesaid termination of our client’s employment services via social media was confirmed to our client when he checked his WhatsApp messages on the morning of 27th March 2021 and saw the same letter circulating on social media forwarded to him by yourselves at 11:00PM on 26th March 2021. In effect, our client was suspended on 26th March 2021 during the day, and terminated on the same day at 11:00PM vide a letter dated 27th March 2021…” the lawyers state.
