Shake-up expected at electoral commission next week

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati is expected to shake-up the electoral commission anytime next week.

Chebukati will announce the roles of the project team and those of the secretariat in the upcoming October 17 elections.

In the new structure, the project team will report to a steering committee made up of commissioners headed by the IEBC chairman.

“Everyone is engrossed in realizing tasks and making October 17 tenable. They (project team) were part of a three-day planning team involving county managers,” communications manager Andrew Limo said as reported by Daily Nation on Saturday.

The new staff structure will have Sailas Rotich become head of the national tallying center, and Salome Oyugi will be in charge of legal services.

According to Daily Nation, a source close to election planning said that Mr. Chebukati will meet both candidates for the October 17 repeat presidential elections- President Uhuru and NASA principal Raila Odinga before publicly making the announcement.

Mr. Chebukati has been under pressure from commissioners to assign Mr. Chiloba and several other high-ranking IEBC staff administrative roles in the upcoming elections, which he is said to have given into, according to sources close to IEBC.

In other news, Safran Morpho- the company contracted to provide the election transmission has requested extended time to configure and upgrade their system, a move that has caused a debate to change the election date to gain momentum.

The IEBC has however maintained that the gazetted date for the repeat elections remains unchanged.

“There has not been any deliberations on the need to change the gazetted date of October 17,” Mr Limo said.
