Contractors and Suppliers working with Nairobi County Government can heave a sigh of relief after Governor-elect Mike Sonko promised immediate pay after his swearing in.

The Governor-elect on Tuesday also warned the contractors and suppliers against giving out any bribe to a cartel purporting to be working for the county.

In a gazette notice, Sonko said there are people who are asking for money from the contractors promising expedition of their pending payment.

“I have not mandated anyone whatsoever to solicit or follow up on any pending payment at City Hall,” he said as the Star quotes.

“Once sworn in office, I will put in place an elaborate process that will ensure genuine contractors and suppliers with pending payments are taken care of.”

There has been hue and cry from the contractors and suppliers working with the county over delayed payment.

Garbage menace in the city is attributed to the fall out between contracted garbage collectors and the county government over delayed payment.

Sonko will be sworn into office next week.

The law provides that a Governor should be sworn into office 10 days after the declaration of election results by IEBC in the respective county.

Sonko also said a special team will comb through all contractual agreements in the county to eliminate fraudulence.

“Those with fake claims and the cartels please keep off before the long arm of the government gets hold of you,” he warned.

His pronouncement comes amid his rejection of a swearing in ceremony that would have gobbled up sh25 million.

He said the money should be used to pay off unpaid salaries for county workers.

In his administration, Sonko has promised to spell out an elaborate and strict tender awarding process to eliminate “tenderpreneurs.”

He will be deputized by former Vivo Energy MD Polycarp Igathe.
