DCI detectives in Kitale have arrested a 48-year-old teacher who has been masterminding car theft.
The suspect, Davis Migosi is a teacher at St Columbans Secondary School in Kitale.
Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti on Saturday said Migosi went underground on June 8 after his henchmen were arrested.
He went to Matunda where he was arrested.
Kinoti said that Migosi has been masterminding the car theft in South Rift.
At the time of his arrest, DCI detectives found Migosi in possession of 17 fake logbooks. Also in his possession was a Toyota Probox which had been reported stolen.
Preliminary investigation indicates that he has been working with rogue officials from the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) in this trade.
“Upon interrogation, officers proceeded to his hideout where two other accomplices, Asman Memba Bakari (38) and Jeremiah Yego Kiptoo (34) were arrested,” Kinoti said in a statement.
Protests by motor vehicle owners from the rift inspired Kinoti’s decision to form a special team to probe increased car theft cases.
On Friday when Migosi was arrested, seven vehicles were recovered. They had been stolen from various places in Rift Valley, Uasin Gishu and Kitale being hotspots.
Migosi’s gang was notoriously known for stealing cars in police yards and posh estates in the rift.
They are; Toyota Axio KCL 790N, Toyota Hilux KBB 876A, White Toyota Probox without number plates, Toyota DX KBJ 316D, Toyota Premio KBN 377A, Toyota Hiace KCL 378K and Isuzu D-MAX Pick Up KCR 734T.
In Migosi’s possession were fake registration plates, chassis number stickers, ignition systems, a chequebook, dismantled number plates, chassis plates and sale agreements.
