As the country awaits the decision by the Supreme Court on the presidential election petition, it’s business as usual in many counties across the country as races for speakership intensifies.
In Homa Bay county, a Texas-based barrister Martin Oketch has announced his candidature in the position according to a report by Daily Nation on Thursday.
The convention of the local assembly is scheduled for next week.
The seat is vacant after former speaker Mr Joash Nyamoko ran and won to become the new Member of Parliament for North Mugirango in the August polls.
”Mr. Oketch, who has been working as a Senior Counsel for a major American Bank in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday said he is interested in the county speaker’s position in a bid to inject meaningful legislative agenda” reports Daily Nation.
The speakership positions in most counties have attracted intensive importunes from local elected MPs trying to persuade MCA’s to vote in their favour.
Incumbent Samuel Ochilo is defending the position despite high opposition from the newly elected and re-elected members.
The speaker’s seat which is widely considered the third most powerful docket in the county set up after the governor and deputy governor has attracted a combination of known and unknown candidates.
In Kiambu County, the position has attracted seven candidates some of whom lost in the general elections.
The top contenders seeking to switch the gear for the Kiambu County Assembly include Lawyer, Githii Irungu, the incumbent who says he will defend his seat.
Karungo wa Thang’wa a former flamboyant Member of County Assembly has also expressed his interest. He lost a stab at the senatorial seat to the incumbent Kimani wa Matangi.
