The Trump administration on Friday asked the country’s Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy to resign and was replaced by his deputy, Admiral Trent-Adams.

Admiral, a nurse by profession, took the position that was held by an Obama appointed physician. She becomes the country’s first Surgeon General who is not a medical doctor.

The wife of the immediate former surgeon general said her husband was asked to resign ” “after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration.”

”Admiral Trent-Adams will for now be in an acting role. As of Friday evening, she had already replaced Dr. Murthy on the surgeon general’s Twitter account, and her portrait had replaced his on the agency’s Facebook page.” NY Times reported

Dr. Murthy’s wife added that her husband had refused to resign and was fired. By the time of going to the press, it was not clear why Dr. Murthy was replaced.

Admiral Trent-Adams is however not the first nurse to serve as the Surgeon general, though, she may be the first one without physician credentials. Dr. Richard Carmona, who served under President George W. Bush, was also a nurse and a physician.
