Two occupants of a Toyota Vitz cheated death on Wednesday after the vehicle plunged into the Indian Ocean.
This happened at the Makupa Causeway. The occupants of the vehicle were a woman identified as Winnie Achieng and her son who were headed to Mombasa Island from Changamwe.
When the car registration number KCY 556B plunged into the ocean, the boy managed to swim to safety but his mother was left stuck in the vehicle whose seat belt couldn’t unbuckle.
However, divers quickly came to her rescue. She was rushed to Coast General Hospital where she died while receiving treatment.
Sources say that she had taken a lot of water by the time she was rescued.
Police are yet to state what caused the accident although eye witnesses say the vehicle was at top speed when the accident happened.
In 2019, Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu died in the ocean after their car slipped while on the ferry at the Likoni Ferry Channel.
It took close to three weeks to retrieve their bodies.
Her husband John Wambua pointed an accusing finger at the Kenya Ferry Services citing that his wife and daughter’s deaths were as a result of KFS’ negligence.
Investigations revealed that the ferry on which she was crossing in had a dysfunctional ramp. Usually, the ramp lifts up when the ferry starts moving acting as a barrier.
In Mariam’s case, the ramp was not working at all and when her car slid backwards, it plunged into the Ocean in the blink of an eye.
Wambua said that Mariam was an experienced driver having driven for 10 years.
