Two Kenyan Al-Shabaab recruiters arrested en route to Somalia

Two Kenyan men believed to be Al-shabaab recruiters have been arrested by police as they tried to make their way to Somalia.

The two Kenyans, Suleiman Hemed Mwandilo and Salama Salim were arrested at Takaba in Mandera County on March 14.

Police officers say they were seeking to travel to Somalia.

According to the Standard, police reports indicate the two Kenyans are Al-shabaab recruiters and facilitators who were bent on crossing over to Somalia to continue with their terror operations.

They were arrested at a roadblock in Takaba as they were planning to cross over to Somalia through the El-Wak – Boroache route.

When presented in court, they said they were headed to Elwak to market fish products. They will however, remain in custody for the next 30 days until police conclude investigations.

Their terror recruitment as further indicated by police reports, shows their activities are concentrated in Mombasa.

They are also accused of drug peddling and other petty crimes in Likoni.

Police said they had been monitoring them for a while before their arrest after finding out that both of them are part of Ramadhan Hamisi Kufungwa’s network.

Ramadhan is a Kenyan fighter who joined Al-Shabaab and holds the position of a middle level commander within Al-Shabaab ranks in Somalia.

He is reportedly said to have recruited youths from Majengo and South Coast areas of Mombasa before fleeing to Somalia.

Ramadhan was a staunch follower of slain muslim cleric Aboud Rogo and Abubakar Shariff aka Makaburi.

His network has spread from South Coast to Tanzania where his main catch is young people who are considered to be social misfits, drug addicts or those who could be HIV positive.

They are trained in Somalia and come back as suicide bombers.
