Two UoN staffers succumb to COVID-19 as cases approach 10,000 mark

Two staffers from the University of Nairobi have lost their lives to coronavirus, Vice-Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama said on Friday.

Kiama during a brief to students and members of staff said that “These are our brothers, sisters, parents and friends. University of Nairobi has also not been spared by this enemy, the Covid-19.”

He said that the two staffers died in the last three weeks.

He added that though the pandemic has threatened to derail the operations of the institutions, e-learning is still ongoing and graduation set for December will go on as scheduled.

He spoke as the number of coronavirus cases hit 9,726. This is after 278 people tested positive on Saturday.

Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi while speaking in Kwale County  said 1,403 samples were tested bringing the total number of samples tested so far to 207, 987.

The youngest is one year old and the oldest is 86.

Nairobi, according to the CAS continues to lead with 5,320 cases recorded so far while Mombasa takes the second position with over 1,200.

Some 99 patients were discharged bringing the total number of discharged patients to 2,832.

Sadly, three more patients died bringing the death toll to 184.
