Kenyan teachers working in refugee camps spread across the country will get salaries for at least seven months courtesy of Ksh155 million donation by the UK government.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie announced on Monday through a virtual summit where Kenya was represented by Acting Director Primary Education Nereah Olick.

The Ksh155 million will pay salaries for 1,304 teachers spread out in Kakuma, Dadaab and Kalobeyi refugee camps in North Eastern region.

The British government has donated Ksh713 million to UNHCR which will be used to pay teachers from 10 countries which have been hosting refugees. The total number of teachers to be paid is 5,669.

Kenya was selected based on the rationale of countries which require urgent support.

British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Mariott said that the UK will continue supporting the refugees to attain education.

She said that with no pay for teachers in the refugee camps, children here are more vulnerable.

“Covid-19 has presented all our societies with huge challenges. The UK is proud to help vulnerable refugees in Kenya gain education, as we build back better after this pandemic,” noted Marriott.

It is estimated that over 300, 000 learners in the refugee camps will benefit from UNHCR’s move to financially salvage teachers in 10 countries with refugees.

Besides Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Pakistan, Yemen, Uganda, Malawi, Chad and Mauritania are among other beneficiaries of UK’s kind gesture.
