Uproar as government hospital turns away raped teenager for failing to buy Sh30 hospital card

A government hospital in Kisumu is on the spot for turning away a teenage girl after she failed to buy a hospital card worth sh30.

The teenager, 17, was raped by six men for 8 hours.

She was turned away without even basic examination at the Ahero Sub-county Hospital.

She narrated her ordeal to The Standard saying she identified two of her attackers although police have not arrested any of them yet four days after the ordeal.

This has also drawn heat with Kisumu residents castigating the police for failing to do their job.

However, she was treated on Thursday after public outcry.

The incident happened on Tuesday as the class seven girl and an orphan was returning home from a nearby hotel in Kisumu where she has secured a job as a casual worker.

It is at this point that two men in a motorbike accosted her and placed a knife on her throat before riding off to a deserted rented home in the town where the ordeal happened.

The other four suspects joined them at the house.

“I screamed for help but they hit and placed a knife on my neck, threatening to kill me if I made more noise,” she plaintively recounted the harrowing ordeal.

They released her at 5am the following morning but ordered that she soak her clothes which had blood stains.

She was later blindfolded and taken to an open area where she remained until the day broke as it was too dark to know where she was.

“I stayed there till morning, because it was too dark to try to do anything or even go anywhere.”

She later went to Ahero sub-county hospital but was turned away because she could not manage to pay a sh30 hospital card.

On Thursday morning, she reported the incident to Nyando sub-county Nyumba Kumi initiative chairman Hezekiah Omanga.
But the hospital’s administrator Joshua Maganga denied the teenager was turned away.

He said in spite of the policy requiring patients to buy a card, the same was not asked of the teenage girl.

Police on the other hand failed to comment on the matter as area police boss did not answer calls made by the Standard.
