US President-elect Joe Biden has promised to better America’s ties with Kenya by working in harmony on various projects,
Biden said this in a congratulatory phone call with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In their conversation, the US President-elect touched on issues of US-Kenya partnerships on climate change, refugees, regional security and the general stability of the country.
On his part, Uhuru congratulated him adding to an a congratulatory message that State House posted a few days after Biden was declared the winning candidate in the US Presidential Elections 2020, reports Daily Nation.
“Americans have spoken loudly and clearly through their votes by picking a highly experienced, colourfully decorated and long-serving leader to become their next Head of State. On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Kenya, I congratulate president-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris for their emphatic win and wish them all the best as they prepare to lead the United States of America into a future of prosperity,” Uhuru remarked.
Uhuru recalled that Biden’s visit to Kenya when he was the Vice President during Barack Obama’s tenure as president greatly improved relations between Kenya and the US.
Biden visited Kenya in June 2010, just before a referendum was held which changed the country’s political landscape and introduced devolution.
At the time, he said that with a new constitution that addressed pertinent issues in the political and economic sphere, more American companies would pitch camp in Kenya for business.
“Putting in place a new constitution and strengthening your democratic institutions and rule of law will further open the door to major American development programs such as the Millennium Challenge Account, and will, I predict, bring about reinvestment by American corporations and international organizations in Kenya that can provide millions of dollars in assistance and grants,” Biden was quoted by VOA then.
With his presidency, Uhuru said that Kenya is upbeat of bigger and better things for the two nations.
Biden is expected to take over office on January 20, 2021 from Donald Trump of the Republican. Trump is, however, yet to formally concede defeat following his loss in the November 3 elections.
