US suspends funding to Kenya’s Ministry of Health departments

By Pharis Kinyua: Jamhuri News

USAID has suspended all funding activities for a number of departments in the Health ministry in the country.

In a notice letter dated May 8, the agency cited that the departments have not fulfilled certain conditions that are supposed to be met by an implementing partner.

The conditions are, however, unspecified.

Salaries and wages for project coordinators, supply chain officers, administrative staff, accountants, financial officers, field epidemiology and laboratory training program staff have been cut off following the suspension.

Other activities that that have been suspended by USAID are funding for domestic and international travel, meetings, events, and workshops as well as the printing of communication material such as brochures, training materials, and guidance documents.

ICT, security services, building and equipment maintenance, fleet maintenance and fuel are also among other sectors that have been affected by the suspension.

USAID Kenya and East Africa Contracting Officer Brain Woody said that the agency will hold a session to answer to any question relating the suspension notice on Wednesday (tomorrow).

“USAID will host an information session on Wednesday in order to address any questions or requests for clarifications related to this suspension notice,” he said.

No word has been given by the Agency as to why the suspension has been initiated although it could be the final nail in the coffin in visualizing US’ President Donald Trump promise to cut aid to African countries.

However, surveillance and service delivery activities, according to Woody, will continue receiving donor cash from USAID.

USAID plays a cardinal role in Kenya’s MOH family planning, nutrition, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, child health and Malaria departments respectively.
