The US department of state has cautioned Americans living in Kenya or those planning to travel there about the possibilities of violent political rallies, ahead of the August 8 general elections.

“Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence,” the State Department said in a travel alert. “As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors.”

Earlier this year, Opposition leader Raila Odinga told Kenyans that if elections are rigged, the opposition will hold mass protests across the country.

An earlier travel warning to Kenya by the U.S department of State on January 13, when the department warned US citizens.from traveling to the border area between Somalia and Kenya because of Terror threats.
