Raila Odinga’s return from the Unites States on Friday was characterized by gunshots and strong bouts of choking teargas along Mombasa Road.

Anti-riot police lobbed teargas canisters at NASA supporters who were headed to JKIA to give their leader a “grand reception”.

The supporters had blocked part of the busy Mombasa Road at Cabanas when police started to disperse them.

Security was air tight in and outside the airport.

On Wednesday, the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett had warned that crowds will not be allowed into the airport.

Boinett said JKIA is a protected area and such crowds pose a major security threat.

“It is not advisable to mobilise huge crowds to travel to that facility as it risks jeopardising the safety of air passengers and other airport users.

“Those without valid reasons to enter the facility will be denied entry. Therefore, those making plans for the day are advised accordingly,” read a statement from Police Spokesperson George Kinoti.

However, NASA leaders vowed to defy the order.

Raila has been on a 10-day tour in the US. He left the country on November 7.

He engaged extensively with personalities and institutions closely monitoring Kenya’s political situation.

In his many addresses, he underscored Kenya is in crisis informed by a corrupt electoral system.

Raila said it is only through his leadership that such injustices can be cured.

Kenyans on Twitter through #RailaReturns welcomed the former Prime Minister.

“#RailaReturns Indeed Raila is our saviour sent by God himself to deliver us from the devil in the UhuRuto government,” said Mbiti Mwondi.

“#RailaReturns The man, the enigma, the people’s president, the patriot, father of the nation…father of democracy. Raila Odinga is on his way back home,” tweeted Hill Kop.
