You are likely to contract coronavirus in Mombasa which has the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases than in Nairobi which has recorded the highest cases.
Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi in a statement said that Mombasa has an attack rate of 107 while that of Nairobi is 55.
She said these figures are important to the ministry because it helps it to know where the risk of transmission is high.
“Mombasa has an attack rate of about 107, where Nairobi has an attack rate of 55. These statistics are important because it tells us that the risk of transmission is higher in Mombasa compared to Nairobi,” she said.
She exuded that the ministry is figuring out the risk rate per county.
“The positive cases that we are now reporting are as a result of community transmission. And we are aware now that the disease is firmly within our urban and rural settings,” Dr Mwangangi explained.
She added that 178 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours after 3,918 samples were tested.
This has raised the country confirmed cases to 5, 384.
The youngest patient is one year and the oldest is 76 years old. Three of the 178 cases are foreigners.
The distribution of the new cases in terms of counties was as follows: Nairobi (100), Kajiado (21), Migori (17), Kiambu (16), Busia (8), Mombasa (7), Machakos (4), Nakuru (2), Uasin Gishu (1), Kericho (1), Taita Taveta (1).
On a bright note, 34 patients were discharged raising the cumulative recoveries to 1,857.
However, two more people succumbed to the virus. The total number of coronavirus deaths as of Thursday were 132.
The Ministry of Health also launched call centres to handle COVID-19 related issues at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
