Public Works Principal Secretary Mariam El Maawy is nursing severe burns, a fracture and a gunshot wound after she was pounced on by Al-shabaab militia on Thursday.
The PS, together with her nephew and two guards had their vehicle intercepted by the gunmen at 3 pm in Milihoi area on the Lamu-Mpeketoni highway.
Her vehicle was driven into Boni forest before KDF officers rescued her.
It is at this point that her car rolled and burst into frames.
She was quickly rushed to Mpeketoni sub-county hospital before she was airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment.
Hitherto, police have not recovered one of the PS’ nephews she was with during the attack.
The militia gunmen also hijacked a lorry headed to Lamu and kidnapped the turn boy before letting the driver continue with his journey.
But he managed to escape after being bundled into a Land Cruiser.
Police recovered a body believed to be a guard accompanying the PS.
In the last week, government forces have been on air offensive and bombing Boni forest to flush out the militants who have terrorized Lamu for the longest time possible.
