It was drama galore when EACC detectives on Thursday pounced on rogue traffic cops collecting bribes along Thika Superhighway, embodying the hunter becomes the hunted saying.
The detectives drove to Witeithie area of Juja where three traffic cops; three men and a lady have horned the art of collecting bribes from motorists without much bother as to whether the public is aware or not.
But on this fateful day, the gods were not on their side as the anti-graft officers drove by in a civilian four-by-four vehicle ready to pounce on their prey.
In a split of a second two of them, a lady officer and a male officer were squarely on their hands while a third officer whom they were on duty with, managed to escape and drove off.
He later called for back up against the EACC detectives and several shots were fired in the air to scare off the detectives.
But with such a strong resolve to end corruption nightmare on the roads, they held on tight to the lady officer and his male colleague and whisked them off.
They appeared before a Nairobi anti-corruption court on Friday to answer to charges of graft.
During the fracas, some of the detectives were injured. They have however, received treatment according to EACC deputy CEO Michael Mubea.
Additionally, in an expose by NTV, the traffic officers at Witeithie report to their work station at 6 a.m and leave at 10 a.m.
By this time, they have collected thousands of shillings from motorists and stashed it to a nearby parked Toyota 110 saloon model car which acts as a temporary bank.
So sweet is the bribe that at some point, two officers were captured on video roughing each other up in the full glare of the public after possibly disagreeing on who should pocket the sh50 bribe.
This was not the first time EACC detectives have engaged traffic cops in their quest to nab rogue officers who make a killing out of collecting bribes from motorists.
