Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i defended himself against claims he has been in contempt of court orders.

The CS who appeared before the National Assembly Security Committee led by Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange on Tuesday said he was condemned by the High Court and fined before he was given audience.

Matiang’i said at the time court orders were issued summoning him before Judge George Odunga over the Miguna Miguna drama at JKIA, he could not make it due to state duties.

“When the judge wanted us to appear in court in person, we were attending a GSU pass out parade. We got condemned unheard, on the basis of lies,” he told the committee.

The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Immigration PS Gordon Kihalangwa also appeared before the committee which is probing why Miguna was deported for a second time.

The CS told the committee that the state did not in any way deport Miguna. “We removed Miguna as an undocumented, unestablished (sic) passenger on transit to his last port of call.”

He said the action by the state to prevent Miguna from gaining further access into the country upon landing at the JKIA was in line with the law since the lawyer refused to hand over his Canadian passport for stamping.

“What we did was in compliance with immigration laws. No one is exempt,” he said. “The pope had his passport stamped on entry. President Obama had his passport stamped on entry. Even President Kenyatta had his passport stamped on entry last night on arrival from Mozambique.”

He added that anyone whose citizenship was revoked before the 2010 Constitution will have to follow due process.

“Anyone who took up citizenship of another country before the 2010 Constitution and thinks they can get it back without following the process is lying to himself,” warned the Interior CS.
