There is a new twist to the Kenyatta National Hospital rape saga which a special team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will focus on.

It has emerged that the whistle-blower of the rape claims at the hospital had tried to extort money from KNH management, reports Nairobi News.

A detective privy to the case said they will investigate this extortion claim as well.

DCI boss George Kinoti held a meeting with his team and KNH management yesterday and investigation kicked off as soon as the meeting ended at around 4pm.

Kinoti said the team has detectives drawn from all DCI units and he expects a thorough job to be done. He also said he will supervise the investigations in person.

“I will personally supervise the investigations,” he said.

“The allegations made against the hospital staff are serious and we have to get to the bottom of them.”

Yesterday, the team retrieved CCTV footage and interrogated a cross-section of workers at the hospital.

The rape claims emerged on Friday morning after one Mildred Owiso went bare knuckle on the alleged dark happenings of the hospital.

In a facebook post, she said that, ““Security is a big issue especially for mothers whose kids are in the nursery. The nurseries are on the ground floor and the mothers on the third floor. Today met a lady who was nearly raped,” she wrote.

She added: “The lady had gone to breastfeed her baby at about 3am. Only thing that saved her the rape ordeal was her voice, Never mind this is someone who had her twins via cesarian and has barely healed. Such vulnerable mothers need protection.”

Another mother who hid her identity according to the Star confirmed that rape instances for breastfeeding mothers at KNH were real. The culprits, she said, are mortuary attendants.

“Rape in KNH hasn’t started today. Those mums with kids in the nursery go through a mess. They get raped by the mortuary attendants who collect bodies from wards,” she lamented.

The rape claims have caused outrage and women leaders have been at the hospital and called for investigations.

KNH management led by CEO Lily Koros has refuted claims if rape at the institution.

Kinoti said the investigations will analyze the security system of the hospital and point out the threats and existing challenges.

If any of the employees is found culpable, he added, he will be arrested and charged.
