Police officer who shot UK-based Kenyan student in 2018 arrested

A police officer linked to the murder of a University of Leeds student while in Kenya Carilton David Maina in 2018 has been apprehended.

DCI detectives arrested Constable Emmanuel Ambunya Oyombe on Thursday. He was attached to KNH Police Post. He shot Maina, then 22 years old in Kibra while going back home from a football match with his peers.

Maina died of multiple gunshot wounds in his stomach.

“Following the completion of an inquest into the death of Carilton David Maina on December 22, 2018 at Laini Saba in Kibera, Constable Emmanuel Ambunya Oyombe of KNH Police Post was today arrested and to be charged for the offence of Murder C/Sec 203 as read with sec 204 of the Penal Code,” police said in a statement.

After his death which sparked a lot of outrage among Kenyans and lobby groups, police claimed that the UK-based Kenyan student was among a group of thugs who had been terrorizing area residents.

Maina who was a student at Maseno School in 2010 won a scholarship to Brookhouse. He completed his introductory course. 

He would later seat for his KCSE in 2013 and scored a mean grade of A and got admitted to the University of Nairobi to pursue a degree in Actuarial Science. He would later secure admission at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom in 2016.

The late Maina was pursuing a course in electronics and communication.
