Babu Owino arrested over ‘mtoto wa mbwa’ remarks

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been arrested and taken to CID headquarters for reasons linked to his remarks allegedly directed to president Uhuru Kenyatta family.

Babu Owino was addressing a crowd in Kawangware on Sunday when he allegedly called the president ”Mtoto wa mbwa”.

Although the first time MP did not mention the name of the president in his remarks, he likened the person he was insulting to long-term African leaders who held on to power before they were eventually removed by the citizens.

Owino, when asked about his remarks on Monday, he refused to apologize and dared police to arrest him, adding that calling someone a dog is not an insult.

“I’m innocent. If you watch the clip…you tell me…who did I abuse? No one.”

Nairobi woman representative Esther Passaris who was present at the rally, and who spoke after Babu Owino, on Monday apologized to the president’s family and condemned the remarks.

Passaris asked all politicians to be responsible while exercising their freedom of speech.

“Freedom of speech comes with responsibility…beg my fellow politicians and Kenyans on both sides of the divide not to abuse this freedom, whether on social media or otherwise,” Passaris said in a Facebook post.

There were protests in Kiambu on Monday as people demanded Babu’s arrest.

Speaking to the press after his arrest, Babu maintained that he did not mention anyone and so he is innocent.
