A family in Nairobi is yet to come to terms with the loss of one of their own who was clobbered to death by rogue inspectors.

Julius Kamau, who was working as a conductor with Mwiki Sacco Limited (MSL) was allegedly clobbered to death by inspectors from the Sacco for hiking fares to Sh100 instead of the normal Sh80.

It is reported that on the fateful day, he left the bus terminus along Tom Mboya Street in the CBD and headed for Mwiki.

Upon reaching Kasarani, two MSL inspectors got on board and asked the passengers how much they had been charged which is when the scuffle ensued.

They rained blows and kicks on him telling him he was denting the image and the name of MSL for overcharging passengers.

The deceased’s wife, Winfred Kimanzi said her husband arrived home greatly bruised.

“He came home and showed me the injuries. His face was swollen and he also had been injured in the mouth,” she told Citizen TV.

Kimanzi said Kamau defended himself saying he had charged an extra Sh20 to passengers who would alight at Mwiki-the furthest since it was raining. Their usual place to alight is at Stima area which is a distance to Mwiki.

“He told me he did not see the point of charging the passengers Ksh.80 then drop them off at Stima area and leave them stranded looking for another vehicle to take them to Mwiki. So he decided to charge Ksh.100 then go straight to Mwiki,” she added.

Kamau was rushed to Kiambu Hospital for treatment after he complained of great pains. He later succumbed to the injuries.

“As we were taking him to hospital, he was complaining of severe body pain, so much that he could barely walk.”

Officials of MSL have denied that their officers beat up Kamau.

But a former conductor in the same route and with the same Sacco said this has been going on for a long time.

A post-mortem is scheduled to be held on Monday to ascertain the cause of death for Kamau.
