Irate standard six pupils attack teachers in Samburu for canning ‘morans’ in girl’s presence

Kirimon Primary School in Samburu West has been closed for four days after irate standard six pupils went berserk and caned their teachers on Monday.

The students are reported to have attacked the teachers with rungus after complaining of being harassed.

According to the Samburu culture, a female teacher is not allowed to punish a male pupil in front of a girl.

And this was the start of the confrontation between the teachers and the boys in class six.

The Star reports that this is the third time the clash has happened between the pupils and teachers at the school.

Knut secretary general in Samburu Raphael Leshatole on Tuesday said that after deliberations with stakeholders involved, they resolved to open the school on Friday.

“All stakeholders from the Education Ministry, Teachers Service Commission, the teachers union and the school’s management will meet to give a way forward.”

“If it is these boys, we will a find a way of handling them because some children want to learn and their parents want them to have an education,” he said.

On their part, parents have urged teachers at the school to understand and respect their culture.

They said canning a moran in front of a girl is wrong going by their tradition and it will cause friction between the pupils and the teachers.
