It will cost Ksh1,398 to drive on the Rironi-Nakuru Mau-Summit dual carriage once the project is complete, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia says.

He says this is the proposal the government has calculated per every kilometre covered on the stretch. Per kilometre, it will cost Ksh6.

Macharia says the tolling of the project will give room for better infrastructure through competitive building.

However, there will be an option to use the dual-carriage highway which will be faster compared to what is already existent.

”The road shortens the journey by one hour but those who will not want to pay to ply the road will have to use other alternative routes though they will have to travel for three more hours,” Macharia stated.

To use the dual carriage highway from Rironi to Nakuru, one will have to part with KSh800 should the proposals be adopted.

The construction of the Rironi-Nakuru Mau Summit highway will cost Ksh160 billion It will stretch to 233 kilometres.

Its construction is scheduled to begin in September 2021. A French consortium – Vinci Highways SAS, Vinci Concessions SAS and Meridian Infrastructure Africa Fund – won the major contract.

The four-lane dual carriage highway once complete will provide linkage to Rift Valley and Western Kenya.

It has been funded through a public-private partnership.

The consortium will design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the highway.

Through the revenue generated by the electronic till collection system, they will recover their finances for 30 years.
