JKIA officials briefly ‘block’ IEBC Commissioner Dr Akombe from boarding US flight

IEBC Commissioner Dr Roselyne Akombe

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Dr Roselyne Akombe was today detained shortly at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while on her way to the US for official duty.

Airline officials are reported to have removed her from her flight and offloaded her luggage before detaining her for a short while.

IEBC in a tweet moments thereafter said her flight was delayed but the officials have since apologized.

“Dr. Akombe who is traveling to the US for an official meeting was delayed at JKIA by officials who have since apologized.”

IEBC’s Communication Manager Andrew Limo said Dr. Akombe had been scheduled for a Tuesday night flight to New York City for an official meeting.

Limo explained she was detained because the airline’s officials were not aware Dr. Akombe is an independent commissioner and thus demanded her clearance.

Her flight was since delayed and was rescheduled for Wednesday.

Before joining the IEBC, she worked in New York.
