About 200 deejays worldwide are set to compete in an online DJ competition which will be streamed live on Facebook and Kenya has several DJs who will participate in the competition.

Among them is George Waweru alias DJ Kalonje, little-known female star DJ Caril from Embu, and DJ Brownskin. Tanzania’s DJ Aisher who resides in Germany will also be in the mix.

The event has been organized by Prince Otach who says that the backdrop of the competition is to nurture talent and bring in revenue from it.

Otach said that with the coronavirus pandemic that has led to lockdown worldwide, lack of entertainment has left DJs desolate and broke.

“It has been a difficult time for the DJs. They cannot do what they love let alone creating income,” Otach told Nairobi News in an exclusive interview.

He offered the competition will among other things, show who is the best among them.

Otach revealed that the idea of a competition was borne before the coronavirus pandemic and plans were that the quarter-finals of the competition would be held in Germany.

“Prior to the lockdown, we were planning to organise the quarter-final stage of the competition in Germany courtesy of Rafiki’s Am Main EV, while the semis would be held in the USA through Genge Entertainment,” he said.

“Kenyans based in the United Kingdom wanted to host the finals. But because we cannot tell the future, the battle will be online. That said, all the promoters have committed to holding shows for the winners in their respective countries on a planned Kenyan DJ of the Year Diaspora tour.”

In the competition, fans from all over the world will follow the live performance for all participants via Facebook.

Before the performance starts, a set of rules will be published for all categories.

The audience will then vote for their preferred contestant in each stage.
