The National Council for Kikuyu elders has spoken against voices made by a rival group, still within the Kikuyu community pushing President Uhuru Kenyatta to generously reward his community through Cabinet appointments.

The President is expected to name his Cabinet in a few weeks time.

Kiama Kia Ma, through its secretary general Patrick Muiru trashed sentiments published by one of the local dailies attributed to Rev Peter Munga

Munga in a publication by Sunday Nation said MPs Amos Kimunya (Kipipiri) and Jeremiah Kioni (Ndaraga) should get Cabinet slots due to their outstanding performance in public service in the past.

“There are leaders with proven records in their past assignments in the public service. The President should not be limited to the so-called professionals. In central Kenya, we have strong leaders with proven records in service delivery in Kipipiri or Ndaragwa constituencies for instance.”

However, Muiru said such a narrative is uncalled for because Kikuyu’s should not expect any preferential treatment because Uhuru hails from the tribe.

He said the appointments should be on merit and should also adhere to regional balancing.

“We expect cabinet appointments to reflect the face and competence of Kenyans. Like other Kenyans we only expect just delivery of service and opportunities,” he said in a statement as reported by Daily Nation.

He said Rev Munga has no authority to speak on behalf of the Kiama kia Ma which represents all factions of Kikuyu elders across the country.

“Kiama Kia Ma is the cultural wing of the Kikuyu Council of Elders, which is duly registered at the Attorney-General’s chambers under the Registrar of Societies.”

He added that the National Council of Elders has duly elected officials and Rev Munga is not among them.

“Rev Munga is definitely not one of them,” he said further dismissing the Reverend’s claims that he is the Secretary General of the National Council of Elders.

The Kiama Kia Ma SG said they have a mandate to articulate the correct position of the largest tribe in the country with caution so as not to “

Muiru said that Uhuru has a mandate to unite all Kenyans which he should start with equal sharing of Cabinet slots to represent all regions of the country.

“We are aware that under Article 131(C) of the Constitution the Presidency has the broad mandate to promote unity for all our citizens. The other regions equally matter when it comes to consideration for cabinet positions.”
