About 1, 205 candidates have had their results cancelled by the Kenya National Examination Council for cheating in last year’s K.C.S.E.

KNEC Chairman Prof George Magoha on Wednesday announced that the students are from 9 out of 10 centres where cheating cases were reported.

“It’s amazing that in some cases the candidates had written the right answers before cancelling them to write wrong answers they received from teachers who colluded with them,” he told the press at KNEC head offices in Nairobi according to the Star.

Insisting that the cancellation of the results is not a punitive measure for the students, Magoha said they are free to register for this year’s K.C.S.E by February 28.

“The students can appeal or register again for the KCSE exams this year,” said the KNEC boss.

Among those accused of exam malpractices are 11 students who were found with mobile phones at their examination centres while nine others were in possession of unauthorized materials in their examination rooms.

KNEC has, however, cleared 67 candidates. They will receive their results soon.

The names of schools involved in cheating will released on Thursday.

Teachers Service Commission is on the other hand expected to punish 40 teachers who were found to have engaged in exam malpractices.

“We have names (of teachers) we have taken somewhere. The onus is not on us to judge them. TSC will find its own ways to judge them. Our work as KNEC is to give them recommendations,” added Magoha.

It was also announced that students who scored a mean of C+ of 46 points will be admitted to public and private universities.

In last year’s K.C.S.E, only 142 students attained A plain 2,714 candidates got A-, compared to 4,645 A- in 2016.

Those who attained university entry mean grade of C+ were only 70,073.
