Doctors at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi have performed a successful surgery on Kenyan based Italian conservationist Kuki Gallmann.

She will however, remain in the hospital for further observation.

Gallmann, 73, the owner of Gallmann Africa Conservancy in Laikipia County was shot on Sunday by bandits who raided her ranch.

She is reported to have been on a routine patrol of the ranch when the herders attacked her and shot at her Toyota Land Cruiser.

She sustained serious bullet injuries on her stomach. She was rushed to Nanyuki referral hospital before she was airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Gallmann was rescued by a police officer on patrol who engaged the bandits. Some of them (bandits) escaped with bullet wounds.

Her conservancy is the largest in Laikipia County and sits on a 100-acre piece of land.

The attack is believed to have been retaliatory in nature after the herders accused police officers of shooting dead over 1000 cattle belonging to them at Gallmann’s ranch in the past month.

But her daughter, Sveva Gallmann disputed these reports saying no cattle were shot by officers at the ranch.

Her attack comes barely after another British national, Tristan Voorspuy, owner of Sosian ranch, was shot dead by bandits on March 5.

Laikipia is under an elaborate police operation following a spate of banditry attacks by herders since the beginning of the year.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett has warned that they will use necessary force to wipe out all bandits in the area.
