A middle-aged woman from Kisumu County is mourning the death of her 14-year old daughter who was struck and eaten by a crocodile at Lake Victoria’s Ng’ou beach in Homa Bay County.

Hellen Amondi was struck by the reptile on Thursday.

She was in the company of her mother Margaret Atieno and her twin sister. They were washing clothes.

When she finished, she returned to wash off the mud on her feet when the crocodile got hold of one of her legs and dragged her into the lake.

“We were about to leave…she had told us one of her shoes stuck in the mud when the crocodile grabbed and dragged her into the water,” said her mother as quoted by The Star

She watched helplessly as her daughter was mauled by the crocodile.

Her cry for help to neighbors did not stop the reptile from eating up her daughter.

“I raised the alarm for neighbors to rescue my daughter but this was in vain as the crocodile had moved far away.”

Kenya Wildlife Service led by South Nyanza Regional Warden Mary Mayande is searching for the remains of Amondi’s body.

Crocodile attacks in the area have increased recently according to area assistant chief William Omogi.

“Crocodiles are causing a lot of discomfort in this area. They have killed numerous of livestock in this village,” said the assistant chief.
