Retired presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki will receive less in their pension starting July in a new move where the National Treasury reduced their allocation by Sh15 million.

They have been allocated Sh96.5 million for their pension and other personal benefits in the new revision. In the financial year ending June, budget estimates show the two retired presidents had an allocation of Sh116.6 million, reports Business Daily.

The new retirement package caps the pension for each former president at Sh4.65 million. This is almost triple Sh1.2 million President Uhuru Kenyatta receives as salary every month.

In 2015 the High Court had stopped the state from paying out the allowances to the retired presidents saying they were exerting undue pressure on Kenyan taxpayers, a decision that has since been appealed by the Attorney General to allow both Moi and Kibaki to continue enjoying the payout.

In the ruling, the High Court nullified sections of the allowances that entitled the retired presidents Sh Sh379,500 house allowance per month, Sh247, 500 fuel allowance, a further Sh247, 500 entertainment allowance and Sh379, 500 for utilities.

In other benefits Moi and Kibaki enjoy; are entitlement to two personal assistants, four secretaries, four messengers, four drivers and bodyguards.

Their retirement package has been criticized overtime citing they are entitled to way too much while they actually left office wealthy and with business empires that rake in millions of shillings.
