Thanking her maker for saving her life in the bloody Migaa accident that happened on the wee hours of Sunday morning, Phoebe Achieng is hoping against hope on seeing her husband and children.

Oblivious to her is that they all perished in the accident that claimed 36 lives.

Achieng is among passengers who were on an ill-fated Busia-Nairobi bound bus which collided head-on with a truck at Migaa and killed 30 people on the spot.

She is a lucky survivor though. However, Achieng who is recuperating at Nakuru Level Five Hospital is hoping to see her husband and her two boys.

Her other two sons died on arrival to hospital for treatment after the accident. She is aware about this.

However, she is hoping to see her husband and her other two sons.

“I hope to see my children, though I am not sure whether they are alive or dead. I have received contradicting information from my relatives who tell me they are alive while others claim they are both dead,” she told Daily Nation.

Her husband and one of her sons are among the 28 passengers who died on the spot.

Her other son died at Molo sub-county hospital while receiving treatment. Her sons were aged 14, 13, 2 and two months respectively.

Nakuru Level Five Hospital nursing officer in charge Teresia Mungai, said they are yet to tell her the truth due to the gravity of the issue.

Achieng recalled the last moments with her family at their rural home in Kisumu. She said her two boys were ill and she had planned on taking them to hospital in arrival upon her comeback.

“Since two of the boys were feeling unwell, I encouraged them to be patient until we get to Nairobi to seek treatment,” she recalled plaintively.

The stretch between Nakuru and Eldoret has several black spots. At the beginning of December, DP William Ruto wife Rachel Ruto together with the clergy prayed at the three black spots-Sachangwan Memorial, Migaa and Salgaa.

A few days after the prayers, an accident involving a Nakuru-bound PSV matatu was involved in yet another grisly road accident that claimed 16 lives.

Weeks later 36 more perished.

The National Transport and Safety Authority have since banned night travel for all long distance public service vehicles.
