Why Chebukati should be a worried man if polls are nullified again

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati is once again in the eye of a storm.

With a second petition challenging the validity of October 26 repeat presidential elections, Chebukati is a man under siege.

There are two petitions challenging the outcome of the polls where President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner, for the second time after nullification of August 8 elections.

Petitioners Njonjo Mue and Khelef Khalifa  have called upon the Supreme Court to institute “just, fit and appropriate orders as the circumstances warrant” on Chebukati should the polls be nullified for the second time, cites Daily Nation.

They argue the firm action to be taken against him should be inspired by the fact that he will have steered a second election that once again, is called to question.

Chebuakati in past defenses said he has done everything by the letter; as prescribed by the September 1 ruling.

The national returning officer for a presidential election appointed a new team and laid off CEO Ezra Chiloba to run the repeat polls.

He even reconstituted the commission’s legal team citing his previous team had “glaring gaps” in their defense in August polls petition by Raila Odinga.

Former IEBC Commissioner Thomas Letangule said in all these changes, Chebukati is guarding his professional image.

“This is the first chairman whose (presidential) election has been annulled.

“He had a chance to repeat it so he would wish to protect this particular election with his life,” said Letangule.
