A total of 124 MPs had by Wednesday signed an impeachment motion against Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki.

The MPs attending a post-election seminar in Mombasa said Kariuki has failed in her job just a few days after she took the Health docket.

The CS stands accused of abuse of office and gross violation of rules and regulations.

At least a third of the 349 members of the National Assembly are required to append their signatures to meet the threshold to impeach the CS.

“We are progressing well and members from across the political dived have signed the petition. It will be the first matter the House will deal with when we resume sittings,” Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi told the Star.

Trouble started brewing for Kariuki in Friday, moments after she sent Kenyatta National Hospital CEO Lily Koros on compulsory leave following a surgery mix-up where a wrong patient was wrongly operated on.

He was sent home to pave way for investigations into the issue.

Lately, KNH has been on the headlines for the wrong reasons. It started with rape claims on lactating mothers in January sparking outrage from several quarters.

Last month, there were reports of baby theft at the institution which is Kenya’s largest referral hospital.

National Assembly’s Health Committee chaired by Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Chege pledged to probe the confusion at KNH.

Chege who was flanked by other members of the committee appealed to the MPs to give her a chance to investigate the matter before impeaching the CS.

She appealed for one week to probe the matter and have Koros appear before the committee. Others set to appear before the committee are the doctor who performed the surgery and KNH board.

“We should not be quick to judge, let us allow investigations to take place after a week we will write a report and table it in Parliament. Colleagues should therefore give us a chance to investigate the matter,” she said.
