Nairobi Remand Prison shut down as Turkana records highest COVID-19 cases in single day

Kenya on Tuesday recorded 137 new COVID-19 cases bringing the total number of cases in the country to 39,586.

Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman in a statement said that 1,258 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. This brings the total samples tested since March to 566,536.

Out of the 137 new COVID-19 cases, 94 are male and 43 are female with the youngest case being a one-year-old and the oldest aged 81 years.

Some 296 patients recovered from the disease bringing the total recoveries to 27,331.

On a sad not, eight more patients succumbed to the disease bringing the total number of deaths to 743.

In Tuesday’s cases, Turkana recorded the highest cases with 34.

Turkana recorded unusual hike and recorded 34 cases.

Nairobi Remand Prison which has accounted for 55 percent of Nairobi’s total cases will not get new remandees effective Wednesday to contain the situation.

Dr Aman also warned against a second wave of the virus citing that the continued disregard by politicians holding public rallies could end up triggering a second wave of the virus.

“We shall have ourselves to blame if Kenya is hit by a second wave of COVID-19. We are between a safe country and a second wave of the virus. The choice is ours,” he stated.
