President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered for the immediate withdrawal of NTSA officers from Kenyan roads.

The President issued the directive while speaking in Meru County on Tuesday.

He said henceforth, all matters relating to traffic will be handled by the Police’s Traffic department.

“Leave the duty to traffic police,” said the President as told by the Star.

He said every Kenyan has a responsibility in taming road carnage.

“It’s better to arrive late and safely rather than die or be injured in a speeding vehicle.”

The President issued the directive while speaking in Igembe, Central, Meru on Tuesday during a funeral procession of three bishops who died on December 29 in a road accident.

The three bishops, Philip Kubai, Stanley Karuru and Moses Ntoeruri respectively were buried in their church compounds in their diocese.

The President’s directive comes against the backdrop of disgruntled voices calling for disbandment of NTSA after road accidents increased in the past year under their watch.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia had earlier said that disbanding the road authority will not reduce the number of deaths.

NTSA of late has found itself at odds with scores of Kenyans after banning night travel for all Public Service Vehicles.
