World’s technology giant, Google has pledged to channel Ksh325 million towards Kenya’s recovery programme following COVID-19 pandemic.

This is in a move aimed at bolstering the economy of the country following a beating by COVID-19 pandemic which struck in March.

The aftermath has been massive job losses, reduced revenue collection and a piling national debt which burdens the taxpayers even more.

Country Director for Google Kenya and East Africa Agnes Gathaiya said that the financial support for Kenya will be in form of grants aimed at supporting education, women empowerment and entrepreneurs.

“During this time, the ability to be online has been a lifeline to so many of us, whether you are a small business trying to stay afloat, a parent looking for updates on how to keep your family healthy, or a student trying to keep up with your studies,” said Country Director for Google Kenya and East Africa Agnes Gathaiya.

Besides, Google has set launched a digital hub where budding entrepreneurs and individuals can gain the much-needed skills.

The hub projects that 500,000 businesses will go online through “Google My Business” platform.

One of the most important things that the hub is offering businesses seeking to go online is skills on how to realign their enterprises for the online market.

Gathaiya added that Google has a target of training one million people on how to take up the new opportunities for business online in 2021.
