Hoteliers feel “campaign heat” with low bookings during Easter

Hotel and catering industry in the Rift part of the country has cried foul over low number of bookings during the just-ended Easter break, the Star reports.

Crayfish CEO Peter Mehta said this year’s bookings were low compared to last year.

Mehta noted that it was occasioned by a heightened campaign season.

Harsh economic times and election anxiety are some of the other factors Mehta pointed out to be affecting business.

Naivasha has been receiving a huge number of tourists due to improved security compared to the Kenyan Coast.

Another hotelier, Stephen Njuguna, Manager Heritage resort said his outlet only received 40 percent bookings.

He said the bad tide of business has everything to do with the ongoing party nomination campaigns. “A lot of money and attention has gone on to the ongoing party nominations and this has adversely affected the hospitality sector.”

Security apparatus in Naivasha led by area Deputy County Commissioner Isaac Masinde said they have elaborate security measures to ensure the region remains a safe haven for tourists and locals as well.

Police patrols have been increased. Prison wardens from Naivasha GK prison have also been roped in the patrols.
