Kenya’s M-Shule developer gets $40,000 (Sh4.15 million) from a Canadian investor

Developers for Kenya’s prototype education app, M-Shule have been bolstered after securing $40,000 (Sh4.15 million) from a Canadian investor, Engineers Without Borders (EWB).

The app has tapped on the SMS and web-based education management platform that applies artificial intelligence to complement learning in schools.

M-Shule’s founder Claire Mongeau in a statement noted the partnership with the Canadian investors will go a long way in enhancing learning in Kenyan schools, East Africa and ultimately, Sub-Saharan Africa.

“We are excited and thrilled to work with EWB Ventures as a partner and investor, given their deep expertise, commitment to ongoing support, and shared focus on the groundbreaking and sustainable change,” she said.

The app has the capacity to handle 144 million primary school pupils across Sub-Saharan Africa. Its launch was first done in Nairobi, January this year.

EWB Ventures managing director Nicky Khaki lauded M-Shule’s innovation citing its holistic approach in bettering the quality of education.

“What we love about M-Shule’s platform is that its holistic and unifying approach arms stakeholders in the primary school ecosystem with data-driven tools critical for improving the quality of education for all students,” noted Khaki.

Focus currently remains in Kenya for the Kenyan education technology startup. However, it focuses on expanding to East Africa by 2019.

M-Shule also plans to expand to Sub-Saharan Africa and Asian continent in years to come.
