Kirinyaga man threatens to join Al-shaabab if not allowed to profess his Akorino faith

A young man in his late twenties has threatened to join outlawed terror group, Al-Shabaab, should his father continue pushing him to profess the Catholic faith instead of his Akorino faith, The Standard reports.

The young man from Kirinyaga County only identified as Ngugi opened the Pandora ’s Box with his father James Mwangi (not his real name) after he decided to join Akorino faith and not the Catholic Church which his father is a staunch believer in.

Trouble began when Ngugi, a reforming pot smoker, was pounced upon by his father one day trying to make a nice wrap of the white turban, synonymous with the Akorino.

His father at first saw it as a joke given that his son experiences “withdrawal effects” of bhang and told his son to, “cut on smoking bhang”.

“Ngugi, punguza bangi ile unatumia. Sasa hio ni maneno gani unaanza ya kufunga viraka kwa kichwa?,” his father charged at his son.

This loosely translates to: “Ngugi, cut on the amount of bhang you smoke. What is this story of you trying to cover your head with tatters?”

It is at this point that his son threatened to join al-shaabab than professing Catholic faith. “I’d rather die or join Al-Shabaab, than be forced to go back to catholic.”

Days later, Akorino followers visited Ngugi in his father’s home while he was not around and started their worship which involves charged drum beating and loud prayers.

But his father returned and much to his shock, he found the followers who he refers to as “misleading cult” in his compound.

He chased them away branding a panga in his hand calling them “a “bunch of confused people high of bhang.”

Both the son and the father have not said a word to each other since then.
