Shiskha Arora, a news anchor at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) is yet to recover from a mugging incident at the Globe Roundabout on Monday.
In a series of tweets, the screen siren recounted that it was around 5:20 PM and she was on her way to KBC studios.
Suddenly, a man walked past her side mirror and knocked it off to the inside and walked off. She rolled down her window to reposition the side mirror and another thug distracted her from the passenger side while another one opened the rear door and got into the backseat.
“Guy one knocked my side mirror bending it backwards and walked away. While I was rolling down my window slightly to reposition the mirror, the second guy started banging the front seat passenger window loudly,” she recounted.
“..grabbed my purse and asked for my phone, at this point in time I was in panic mode, couldn’t say anything. He asked for it again and reached for my neck, strangling me,” she said.
“As he was strangling my neck, I desperately gasped for air, I started hooting loudly to get some attention hoping somebody would help me. People started getting out of their cars and that’s when he let go and fled,” she recalled.
The thug fled with her purse. This incident has left her petrified and is one of the many muggings going in the city in the recent past.
Following the Shiksha’s incident, the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai promised to have a crackdown in the city.
“I have taken note of insecurity within CBD. Action will be taken and security enhanced,” he tweeted.
Hours before Shiksha’s ordeal, a tweep warned Kenyans against walking along 680 Hotel, Standard Street, City Hall and Supreme Court Street in the evening.
He said that there is a criminal gang operating along the streets.
In response, the DCI urged those who have been robbed to report.
“The DCI urges members of the public who may fall or have fallen victims of mugging within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to make formal reports at the Nairobi Central DCI offices whenever such unfortunate incidences happen. While many victims take to social media to have been arrested along various Streets and Walks within the CBD, as the few who report at the station fail to pursue their cases or never turn up for hearings.”
