“Over deployment” of security forces likely to intimidate voters- European Union Mission

The European Union Election Observation Mission has allayed fears of voters feeling intimidated ”over deployment” of huge groups of security personnel in an area.

EUOM Chief Observer Marietje Schaake in an interview with Daily Nation said deployment of large numbers of security agents is likely to be perceived as intimidation by voters.

Schaake also noted this could lead to voters’ disenfranchisement. However, she underscored that it is important to provide security during the polls at all costs.

“There is a role for the security services to make sure that in areas where it may not be safe that they provide security,” she underscored.

“But of course overbearing or deploying more security personnel than is necessary could intimidate people.”

“It is a thin line but an important one and we are talking to security forces to ensure they achieve this balance,” she went on.

Inspector general of police said he 100, 000 officers will be deployed to ensure there is security during the polls. Her concerns came after those made by NASA.

NASA has alleged that Jubilee is using the military to rig elections.

However, both the Military through Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo have strongly refuted these claims.

Jubilee has termed the claims as “propaganda” and a “sign of defeat”

Schaake also urged all political players to desist from incitement or talks that could spark violence.

“People also need to appreciate that they may have to accept losing and gracefully congratulate their opponents. It is a normal part of democracy,” said the EOM Chief observer.

On IEBC’s ICT Director Chris Msando’s murder, she said his death is chilling and those who perpetrated the act should be brought to book.
